Michael Church, a junior mathematics major from Harrisburg, Penn., has received a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for Excellence in Education. Established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, the award is meant to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

Nominated by the Carleton mathematics department, Church will receive a one year scholarship to help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board for the 2004-2005 academic year. He will spend the summer of 2004 conducting math research in the Washington, D.C., area as part of a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). After completing his undergraduate education at Carleton, Church plans to continue his mathematics studies in graduate school.

Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,113 mathematics, science, and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

Ranked among the nation’s top liberal arts institutions, Carleton is a private, co-educational college of 1,900 students located 40 miles south of Minneapolis and St. Paul. High academic standards, an excellent teaching faculty and a diverse student body contribute to Carleton’s outstanding reputation.
