On Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1, 2003, Carleton hosted a weekend symposium to honor the lives and work of Paul and Sheila Wellstone - passionate and deeply committed individuals who touched so many of us personally.
The symposium celebrated Paul's and Sheila's legacy of leadership and involvement by focusing on three aspects of their work: teaching and mentoring; grassroots organizing and activism; and national progressive politics. Community organizers, activists, alumni, and current students presented talks and workshops throughout the weekend about their work in activism, teaching, and electoral politics. An interfaith service and a concert featuring campus groups and other artists enjoyed by the Wellstones were also held. Oral histories were taken throughout the weekend.

Carleton College was pleased to host the Wellstone Symposium which honored the commitments and values of Paul and Sheila Wellstone. Although the themes and issues surrounding the symposium were political, the weekend was not designed as a partisan event.
The College is committed to bringing to campus speakers from all political perspectives, not to endorse a party but to represent a variety of viewpoints. While this symposium focused on the causes that were important to the Wellstones, Carleton regularly hosts speakers from all sides of the political spectrum.
