Distance and Intimacy: New Teaching at Carleton

Introductory Remarks - John RamsayGoals:

1. To gather a sense of the priorities of the issues surrounding these technologies
2. How will the group of people be chosen?

Where we are and how we got here:A short history of Academic Computing at Carleton - AN

1. "The Coup" - reorganization of computing support
2. 1993: ACNS created, with focus on curricular computing and networking support.
3. Not a "help desk" model: no restrictive "suite" of software. Unusual among other institutions.
4. "Curricular Computing Grant" program. It's about finding appropriate uses of technology in the classroom, not software development. Large participation rate.
5. Faculty Coordinators: ACNS support staff specific to academic divisions
6. Faculty Advisors: faculty members

Academic Computing here relative to other institutions - AN

Support StructuresACNS
Staffing - AN
Technological - LL
Library- SD

1. Publishing has been transformed as a result of"new media" (e.g. The Web)
2. Reference Desk
3. Instruction program. Compared to other institutions, our participation rate is relatively low.

Policy Issues to AddressIntellectual Property Rights
Digital Millenium Copyright Act - AN
1. Passed in October 1998
2. Whole Campus Issue - not just computing support
3. "Safe Harbor" - allows institutions to register to be immune for partial liability for copyright infringements.
4. Must have a Campus Representative, and a Copyright Policy
Fair Use - AN
Ownership of Locally Produced Materials - AN
Print is not the same as digital media: No kidding.
Fair Use Redefined
Outreach: Alumni and Prospective Students - LL
Professional Recognition and Rewards - SD

1. How does the work related to developing materials like this be treated compared to more traditional "results" - impact on teaching
2. Electronic journals compared to paper publication

Professional Development- SD

1. What are the opportunities available for developing expertise in these technologies?
2. ACNS & Human Resources: are our offerings adequate?

Student Access to Unexamined Web Resources
Web Issues - JR

1. How are courses different today (and tomorrow) from the pre-electronic era?
2. Materials are "free"
3. Easily available - easy access to diverse resources
4. Things updated frequently
5. Renowned Experts

How will courses look in 5 years?

1. Two five week courses: first course to decide what the second course will be
2. The Remote Expert Course
3. The Competing Grand Narratives Course
4. The "No Holds Barred - Battle Of The Bookmarks" course
5 . Multiple-independent-study-module course

Impact of these technologies on the students - SD

1. View of the world as a fractured collection of information

Evaluating the quality of information sources - SD

1. Information Literacy
2. Develop a conceptual model of how information is organized in their field
3. Give students a sense of how information is produced in their discipline
4. How to formulate questions
5. How to access the information available; what resources are available, what strategy for searching
6. Knowing how to evaluate the quality of information
7. Understanding how to make use of the information
Discussion
Other issues

- What about electronic courses (from other institutions)? Are electronic courses different than non- electronic?
- Is there a difference in quality of education between remote education vs. physically proximate lectures?
- Does electronic communication inhibit conversation?
- Sharing expensive but remote resources.
- Shift of courses from "content" to "process" and capabilities.
- How do we protect the materials we produce?
- Learning to use the new technologies in the teaching environment.
- How do we prioritize the use of our resources?
- Whose information is it anyway? What's legal to use? How do you disseminate that to the college community? How do you cite these new electronic/multimedia items?

We need a place to organize the local knowledge/experience with these issues, be it a FAQ, a set of annecdotes, etc.
