Teach Only What Is Worth Knowing

Frank Morral

"We all love to instruct, though we teach only what is not worth knowing."
Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice
Chapter XII

What Jane Austen says here seems in keeping with the idea of putting learning at the center of what we do, not teaching. Still, some things worth knowing might be taught. The problem comes when the love we all have for instructing blinds us to what is or is not worth knowing, or to what students could better do for themselves.
